Interview with James Stevens, owner of Stevens Circus School

Hi James, can you tell us a little bit about how you got started with the circus school business?

I've always been fascinated by circus arts and have been involved in the industry for many years. It was a natural progression to open up my own business selling circus equipment and offering classes and performances. After years of working for other people, I decided it was time to create my own path.

What were some of the most significant challenges you faced when starting your circus school business?

One of the biggest challenges was finding the right space to rent that was both affordable and big enough to accommodate all of the equipment we needed. Then there was the challenge of marketing and getting the word out there. Thankfully, tools like Shopify made it easier to set up a professional online store and reach a wider audience.

How instrumental was Shopify in the success of your business?

Shopify was definitely a game changer for my business. Before I started using the platform, our online presence was pretty non-existent. But with Shopify, I was able to create a beautiful online store where people could easily purchase our products and browse upcoming events. It made it a lot easier to manage our inventory and streamline the entire sales process.

Can you share any specific success stories or moments that stand out to you in your journey as a circus school owner?

There have been a lot of unforgettable moments over the years. But one that stands out to me was when we were able to put on a big showcase with some of our most talented students. It was amazing to see the growth and progress of these individuals and to see them shine on stage. It was a huge success, and we had a lot of people come out to support our students.

What advice would you have for someone looking to open up a similar business in their own city?

My advice would be to start small and build up gradually. Find a space that works for your needs and create a strong online presence using tools like Shopify. Don't be afraid to take risks and try new things. And always stay passionate about what you're doing - it will shine through in your work and inspire others.
