Interview with Ava Martinez, the Owner of Feet Beat Studio in New York City, NY
1. Can you tell us about how you got the idea to start Feet Beat Studio?
I've been dancing since I was a little girl and always loved the passion and energy it brings. After graduating college with a degree in Performing Arts and Dance, I struggled to find a studio that offered quality training and an inclusive environment. That's when I realized I had the passion and skills to create my own dance studio, one that provided both elite training and a welcoming atmosphere.
2. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your own business?
As with starting any business, there were a lot of financial and logistical hurdles I had to overcome. One of the biggest challenges was finding the right location that was both accessible and affordable. Additionally, competing with established dance schools in the area was also a difficulty.
3. How did you overcome these challenges and what did you learn along the way?
I focused on building relationships with local teachers and dancers, and used my background in marketing to help spread the word about Feet Beat Studio. I also started offering free trial classes to attract new students and build my customer base. It was important to remain determined and patient. I learned to stay focused on the long-term goals and to make small, yet impactful, decisions that would help me achieve them.
4. What made you choose Shopify as your e-commerce platform?
I started selling merchandise like dance gear and apparel in-store, and I wanted to expand this aspect of our business online. Shopify was an easy-to-use platform that allowed us to create a user-friendly online store, manage our inventory, and streamline our shipping processes.
5. In what ways has Shopify contributed to the success of your business?
Shopify has allowed us to reach a wider audience and have a stronger online presence. It has helped us increase sales and manage the digital aspect of our business efficiently. We've also been able to offer online dance classes and workshops through the platform, which has been incredibly beneficial in the current climate.
6. What are some future plans you have for Feet Beat Studio?
We're hoping to continually grow our reach and impact in the industry. One goal is to expand our studio locations beyond our current city. We're also working on creating more digital content, such as tutorials and dance challenges, to connect with our audience and community on a deeper level.
7. What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting their own dance studio?
Do your research and be prepared for it to take time and effort to grow your business. It's important to establish a clear vision and values for your studio, and to remain committed to them. Surround yourself with a team of passionate and talented individuals who can contribute their unique skills and perspectives. Finally, continue to educate yourself about the industry and different ways to enhance your business.
