Interview with Jackson Williams, owner of Footsteps Shoe Store in Portland, Oregon

1. How did Footsteps Shoe Store come about, Jackson?

Shop Stories interview with the owner of a Shoe Store

I've always been passionate about footwear, so I decided to pursue that passion and open up a shoe shop. I noticed that there weren't too many shoe stores in the city, and the ones that were there didn't stock the kind of shoes I was interested in. I wanted to offer a unique selection that people couldn't find elsewhere.

2. What were some of the challenges you faced in the early days of running Footsteps Shoe Store?

The biggest challenge was getting the word out about the store. We didn't have a big advertising budget, so we had to start with some guerrilla marketing tactics, like putting up flyers and talking to people on the street. We also had to navigate the competitive landscape of the shoe industry, which is dominated by big players like Nike and Adidas.

3. How did you eventually achieve success with Footsteps Shoe Store?

We realized that we had to embrace e-commerce in order to reach a wider audience. We started using Shopify to sell our shoes online, and it completely changed the game for us. Suddenly, we were able to reach customers all over the country, not just in Portland. We also focused on building a strong brand identity that resonated with our customers. We wanted to be more than just a shoe store – we wanted to be a lifestyle brand.

4. Can you tell us more about how Shopify helped you grow your business?

Shopify was a game-changer for us. It allowed us to easily set up an online store and manage our inventory, orders, and shipping all in one place. Plus, Shopify has a built-in payment system, which made it easy for our customers to make purchases. We were able to focus on growing our business rather than worrying about the technical details of running an e-commerce store.

5. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own shoe store?

My advice would be to focus on differentiation. You need to offer something that customers can't find elsewhere. Whether it's a unique selection of shoes, personalized customer service, or a strong brand identity, you need to give people a reason to choose your store over the competition.

6. What's next for Footsteps Shoe Store?

We're continuing to expand our online presence through Shopify, but we also want to focus on our physical store in Portland. We're looking to offer more workshops and events that align with our brand values and community-focused ethos. We want Footsteps Shoe Store to be more than just a store – we want it to be a hub for creativity and connection.

7. Finally, what's the most rewarding part of running Footsteps Shoe Store for you?

The most rewarding part is seeing how our products and brand resonate with our customers. We get so much positive feedback from people who love our shoes and what we stand for. It's incredibly fulfilling to know that we're making a difference in people's lives through something as simple as a pair of shoes.
