Interview with Jackson Mitchell, Owner of Mitchell's Home Goods in Portland, Oregon
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about how you got started with Mitchell's Home Goods?
A: Sure! I've always had an eye for design and I was always interested in home decor. So after leaving my previous job, I decided to take a leap of faith and start my own home goods store. It was a risky move, but I knew I was passionate about it and I wanted to see if I could turn that passion into a business.
Q: What were some of the challenges that you faced in the early stages of starting the business?
A: The biggest challenge was definitely getting the word out about my store. I had to figure out how to market myself and let people know that I existed. Getting a physical location was also difficult, as the cost of rent in Portland can be pretty high. But with a lot of hard work and persistence, I was eventually able to find an affordable space that I could turn into my dream store.
Q: How did you overcome these challenges and eventually find success?
A: One of the things that really helped me was setting up an online store using Shopify. That way, even if people didn't know about my physical location, they could still find me online and purchase from me there. It also helped me reach a wider audience outside of Portland. I also had to spend a lot of time networking and building relationships with other local businesses and influencers in the community. Word-of-mouth is a powerful tool and I was able to leverage that to bring in more customers.
Q: Can you tell us more about how Shopify has impacted your business?
A: Shopify has been a game-changer for Mitchell's Home Goods. Not only has it helped me reach more customers and build my online presence, but it has also made it much easier to manage my inventory and process orders. I used to do everything manually, which was time-consuming and prone to error. Now, with Shopify, everything is streamlined and automated, which frees up more of my time to focus on growing the business.
Q: What is your main philosophy when it comes to your business?
A: My philosophy is simple: provide high-quality products with exceptional customer service. I want every customer that comes into my store to feel welcomed and appreciated. I also want them to leave feeling like they've found something unique and special that they can't find anywhere else. It's not just about selling them a product, it's about creating an experience that they'll remember and want to come back to.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting their own home goods store?
A: My advice would be to do your research and really understand your market. You need to know what your customers are looking for and what sets you apart from the competition. It's also important to have a solid business plan and to be prepared to put in a lot of hard work. Starting a business is never easy, but if you're passionate about it, it can be incredibly rewarding.
Q: What's in store for the future of Mitchell's Home Goods?
A: Right now, I'm focused on expanding my online presence and growing my customer base. I also plan to regularly update my product selection to keep things fresh and interesting for my customers. Ultimately, my goal is to become the go-to destination for people in Portland (and beyond!) who are looking for unique and stylish home decor and furniture.
