Shop Stories interview with the owner of a Custom Furniture Shop

Interview with Henry Mitchell, Owner of Mitchell's Custom Furniture Shop in Austin, Texas.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started in the custom furniture business?

A: I grew up with a father who owned a woodshop and always had a love for woodworking. After graduating with a degree in design, I noticed a lack of unique and customized pieces in the furniture industry. That's when I decided to open my own shop, Mitchell's Custom Furniture, to offer clients one-of-a-kind pieces that fit their individual styles and needs.

Q: What were some of the challenges you faced when first starting your business and how did you overcome them?

A: The biggest challenge was definitely finding clients. It took a lot of networking and word-of-mouth marketing to get our name out there. Additionally, it was difficult dealing with the financial side of things and figuring out how to price our pieces competitively while still making a profit. We teamed up with Shopify to handle our online store and payment processing, which has been a game-changer for our business.

Q: How do you stay creative and inspired when designing new pieces for your customers?

A: I draw inspiration from everything around me, from nature to art to architecture. I also make sure to collaborate closely with my clients to understand their vision and bring it to life. It's important to stay open-minded and adaptable in this industry to always be coming up with new and unique designs.

Q: Can you share a specific project that you are particularly proud of?

A: There was one project where the client wanted a coffee table that could also be used as a dining table for their small apartment. We designed and created a table that was not only functional but also a beautiful statement piece. Seeing their satisfaction and joy with the final result was incredibly rewarding.

Q: How has technology and e-commerce impacted your business?

A: Shopify has played a huge role in establishing our online presence and making it easy for customers to order custom pieces from us. Additionally, technology has made it easier to share our work on social media and connect with potential clients. It's been a great way to expand our reach and increase our sales.

Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the custom furniture industry?

A: I would say to always stay true to your vision and design aesthetic, but also be open to learning and growing as a business owner. Networking and building relationships with clients and other professionals in your industry is key to success. And of course, utilize e-commerce platforms like Shopify to streamline your business operations and make it easier to reach customers.
