Interview with Oliver Greene, owner of Greene's Furniture in Chattanooga, Tennessee

1. How did you get started in the furniture business?

Shop Stories interview with the owner of a Furniture store

I actually got started in the furniture business by accident. I was working for a moving company and ended up delivering furniture to a local store. The owner was looking for some extra help, and I thought it might be an interesting change of pace from my job as a laborer. I started out as a sales assistant and worked my way up from there.

2. What sets Greene's Furniture apart from other furniture stores?

I think what sets us apart is our commitment to quality and customer service. We don't just sell furniture; we help people create homes they love, and we take pride in the relationships we build with our customers. Plus, we offer a wide range of styles, from traditional to modern, so there's something for everyone.

3. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting out?

One of the biggest challenges in the early days was getting our name out there and establishing ourselves in the community. We didn't have a big advertising budget, so we had to rely on word of mouth and building relationships with our customers. Another challenge was managing inventory and cash flow, especially in the first few years.

4. How did you overcome those challenges?

We overcame those challenges by staying focused on our values and our customers. We worked hard to earn their trust and loyalty, and we reinvested profits back into the business to keep growing. We also started using Shopify to manage our inventory and sales, which helped us streamline our processes and stay on top of our cash flow.

5. How has using Shopify helped your business?

Shopify has been a game-changer for us. It's given us a way to reach customers beyond our local community and has made it much easier to manage our online sales and inventory. We can track everything from one place and get insights into what's working and what's not. It's really helped us stay organized and grow our business.

6. Can you share a memorable moment from your time in the furniture business?

One moment that stands out was when a customer came into the store looking for a dining table for her family. We worked with her to find the perfect table and chairs, and she ended up spending more than she had planned. A few weeks later, she came back into the store with tears in her eyes, thanking us for helping her create a space where her family could gather and connect. It was a powerful reminder of the impact we can have on people's lives.

7. What advice would you give to someone starting a business today?

I would say stay true to your values and your vision, even when it's tough. Surround yourself with people who support you and believe in what you're doing. And don't be afraid to take risks and try new things, whether it's using a new technology like Shopify or exploring a new market. Innovation and adaptability are key to success in today's fast-paced business world.
