Interview with Veronica Brown, Founder, and Owner of Wood & Craft in Portland, Oregon.
1. Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to start your own woodworking shop?
Veronica: Sure, I've always been an art enthusiast. My grandparents owned a craft shop where I spent much of my time as a child, and I learned to appreciate the beauty of handmade crafts, furniture, and art pieces. After studying Fine Arts in college, I worked for a furniture maker for a few years before deciding to start my own woodworking shop. I was inspired by the idea of creating original, custom-made wood pieces that could be passed down from one generation to another.
2. What challenges did you face when starting your own business, and how did you overcome them?
Veronica: My biggest challenge was sourcing quality wood and finding the right tools and equipment on a limited budget. I had to do a lot of research, and I learned a lot by attending seminars on woodworking and business management. Another major challenge was creating a name for myself in a highly competitive market. I overcame this by embracing social media and launching my store on a major e-commerce platform like Shopify, which allowed me to reach a wider audience.
3. Can you describe a time when you faced a significant setback in your business?
Veronica: One significant setback I faced was the COVID-19 pandemic. Which led to the closure of our physical store, supply chain disruptions, and a spike in production costs. It was a challenging time, but we managed to pivot our business model, revamp our website, and sell our products online using Shopify. The demand was so high that we had to hire more staff to keep up with the orders.
4. Can you tell us more about your experience with Shopify and how it has helped your business?
Veronica: Shopify has been a game-changer for our business. It has allowed us to reach customers all over the world and build a loyal customer base. With Shopify, we can easily manage our inventory, orders, and payments, and it also provides us with valuable analytics to help us make better business decisions.
5. What has been your proudest accomplishment with Wood & Craft so far?
Veronica: I am most proud of the fact that we have been able to create sustainable, eco-friendly products that are also beautiful and functional. We have received many accolades for our innovative designs and green practices, and we believe that this is the future of the industry.
6. What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own woodworking business?
Veronica: Do your research, find a niche, and invest in the right tools and equipment. Don't be afraid to learn new skills and attend workshops and seminars. Most importantly, embrace technology, and use platforms like Shopify to sell your products online.
7. What's next for Wood & Craft?
Veronica: We plan to expand our product line and offer more workshops and classes to the local community. We also hope to open more physical stores in other parts of the country while continuing to grow our online presence. Ultimately, our goal is to become the go-to source for quality, sustainable wood products in the industry.
