Interview with Jackson Mitchell, the Owner of Harmony Music Store in Nashville, Tennessee
Hi Jackson, thank you for taking the time to talk to me today. Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got into the music industry?
Sure thing, I've been Jackson Mitchell for 47 years now. I've always loved music, and when I was younger, my dad played guitar and sang for local events. Seeing the response from the audience was just exhilarating to me. In my 20s, I decided to take some guitar lessons and eventually started playing gigs with a band around Nashville. I really enjoyed sharing music with people and wanted to do something more with it, so the next logical step for me was to open up a music store.
What were some of the challenges you faced when opening Harmony Music Store?
Well, there were quite a few challenges. One of the biggest ones was finding the right location. It took some time to find a decent spot in Nashville that was affordable, but we eventually stumbled upon a great space in an up-and-coming neighborhood. Another major challenge was competing with the big box stores and online retailers. We knew we had to offer something unique to entice people to come to our store.
How did you overcome those challenges?
To overcome the challenge of location, we focused on building relationships with our neighbors and community. We made an effort to get to know people and become a gathering space for local musicians. To compete with the big box stores and online retailers, we knew we had to offer top-notch customer service and products that couldn't be found anywhere else. We also eventually partnered with Shopify to help us expand our online presence.
Can you tell me a little more about your experience with Shopify?
Certainly. Shopify has been a game-changer for us. It allowed us to offer our customers an online shopping experience while still maintaining the personal touch of our brick-and-mortar store. It's also helped us reach customers outside of Nashville and allowed us to grow our business in ways we never thought possible.
You mentioned unexpected success earlier. Can you tell us more about that?
Yeah, we really never expected to experience the level of success that we have. We initially just wanted to offer a place for musicians to buy quality instruments and accessories. But as we grew, we started offering lessons, repairs, and even started hosting events at our store. We've also become a hub for the Nashville music scene, and it's been an honor to contribute to such a vibrant community.
That's great to hear, Jackson. What's next for Harmony Music Store?
We're continuing to focus on growing our online presence with Shopify, but we also want to expand our physical space. We're looking to add more lesson rooms, a recording studio, and possibly even a performance space. We're excited to see where our journey takes us.
Well, it sounds like you have a lot of exciting things in store for Harmony Music Store. Thanks so much for chatting with me today, Jackson.
Thank you for having me.
