1. How did you get started with Green Haven Food Co-op?

I have always been passionate about sustainable food and wanted to create a localized platform that connects local farmers to consumers. So, I started Green Haven Food Co-op 6 years ago, and slowly it became popular among conscious eaters in Seattle.

2. What were some early challenges you faced in running the food co-op?

One of the biggest challenges we faced was finding a source of funding and getting new members. But we managed to overcome this by giving incentives to our early members, which helped us gain word of mouth referrals. We also took part in many local events and farmers' markets to create awareness about the importance of sustainable food.

3. How has your member base grown over the years?

When we started, we had only a handful of members. But as word spread about the quality of produce we offered, we witnessed a gradual increase. Today, we have over 300 members who regularly depend on us for their groceries.

4. Can you talk about unexpected success that your store has achieved?

To be honest, I was not expecting such great success. After operating for almost 5 years, we realized that to expand our business, we need to have an online store. That's when we decided to use Shopify, a cloud-based platform for online sales. Our online store has allowed us to reach a wider audience beyond the city boundaries. That was the turning point for us, and soon we saw revenues steadily increase.

5. What are the unique benefits that Green Haven Food Co-op provides to its members?

As we are dedicated to sustainable food, we offer members with exclusive access to locally sourced produces, which are not available at other grocery stores in the region. We also make sure that all the farmers we source from are certified organic and follow ethical standards.

6. How did Shopify become an integral part of your business?

Shopify has been a game-changer. It has allowed us to expand our reach and fulfill orders of members, even during the pandemic. Shopify has streamlined our online operations, making it easy for us to manage orders and inventory. Our members are loving our online store, and we plan to take it forward in the future.

7. Do you have any advice for budding entrepreneurs who wish to start a local business?

Running a local business is never easy, but if you are passionate about your idea, then you should go for it. Believing in yourself and your mission is the key to success. You should also be open to incorporating new technologies like Shopify, which can help scale your business in unforeseeable ways.
