Interview with Samantha Peters, Owner of Peters Garden Sculpture in Portland, Oregon
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about how you got started in the garden sculpture business?
A: Absolutely! I've always had a love for design, but my true passion was sparked when my husband and I purchased our first home with a large garden. I found myself drawn to garden sculptures and started collecting them. I quickly realized that there was a market for unique and high-quality garden sculptures, and Peters Garden Sculpture was born.
Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business?
A: One of the biggest challenges was finding the right suppliers. I needed to source sculptures that were not only beautiful and unique but also durable and able to withstand the elements. It took a lot of research and trial and error, but eventually, I found a handful of suppliers that met my high standards.
Q: How did you manage to overcome those challenges?
A: I did a lot of networking within the industry and attended trade shows to meet suppliers face-to-face. Eventually, I found a few hidden gems that had the quality and uniqueness that I was looking for. Shopify was also a huge help in managing my inventory and streamlining the ordering process. It allowed me to focus my energy on growing the business rather than getting bogged down in administrative tasks.
Q: Can you tell us about a moment of unexpected success in your business?
A: The most unexpected success came when I started selling my sculptures on Shopify. I was blown away by how easy it was to set up my online store and how quickly I started seeing results. I was initially hesitant to sell online, but it's turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made for my business.
Q: What has been the most rewarding part of running Peters Garden Sculpture?
A: For me, it's all about seeing the joy that my sculptures bring to people. I've had customers tell me that our sculptures have transformed their garden into a peaceful and calming oasis. Seeing those happy faces and knowing that I had a hand in creating that environment is incredibly rewarding.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own small business?
A: Do your research! Make sure there's a market for what you want to sell and take the time to find the right suppliers. Don't be afraid to ask for help - there are plenty of resources out there for small business owners. And don't forget to take advantage of tools like Shopify to help you streamline your business. It's made all the difference for me.
Q: What's next for Peters Garden Sculpture?
A: I'm constantly on the lookout for new and exciting sculptures to add to our collection. I'm also working on expanding our online presence and improving our customer experience. It's important to me that Peters Garden Sculpture continues to grow and evolve so that we can continue to bring joy to our customers' gardens for years to come.
