Interview with Rachel Adams, owner of Little Wing Records in Portland, Oregon.
1. How did you get started in the music industry and eventually decide to start your own record label?
I've always been passionate about music and love discovering new artists. After spending many years working in different roles in the music industry, I realized that what I really wanted to do was create a platform for local artists to grow and showcase their talents. That's when I decided to start Little Wing Records.
2. What were some of the initial challenges you faced when starting your own independent record label?
One of the biggest challenges was finding funding to get started. I didn't come from a wealthy background, so I had to work hard and save up to start Little Wing Records. Another challenge was building relationships with local artists and convincing them to work with me when I was just starting out.
3. How did you overcome those challenges and eventually find success with Little Wing Records?
I was persistent and worked hard to build a strong network within the local music scene. I also used platforms like Shopify to reach a wider audience and sell our music online. As we established ourselves and built a reputation for supporting local artists, more and more people started showing interest in our work.
4. Can you tell us about a particular artist or album that you're most proud to have supported and released on your label?
There have been so many amazing artists. But one that comes to mind is Sarah and the Sparks. They were a relatively unknown band when we started working with them, but with our support, they were able to grow their fanbase and gain momentum in the industry. Their debut album sold out within a few weeks and they're now headlining shows all over the country.
5. What role did platforms like Shopify play in your success?
Shopify was crucial in helping us reach a wider audience beyond our local community. We were able to create a professional online presence and easily sell our products to customers all over the world. It helped us become more accessible and grow our customer base, which ultimately led to more success for Little Wing Records.
6. What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own independent record label?
My advice would be to stay true to your passion and don't give up, even when faced with challenges. It's important to build relationships within the community and create a strong network of supporters. And don't be afraid to use technology and platforms like Shopify to help grow your business and reach a wider audience.
