I had the pleasure to interview Maria Rodriguez, owner and operator of The Tipsy Grape, a popular liquor store in downtown Portland, Oregon. Maria has been running her business for over a decade, and her store has become a go-to destination for locals and tourists alike.
1. How did you get started in the liquor industry?
I got started in the liquor industry almost by accident, to be honest. I was working in a restaurant that had a small bar attached to it, and I started to get interested in the different types of spirits we stocked. I began to read up on the different brands, tasting them myself, and learning about their histories. I quickly realized that I wanted to learn more about the industry and eventually open my own store.
2. What were some of the challenges you faced when starting your business?
When I first started, I faced a lot of challenges. I had to find a location for my store, navigate through all the legal requirements to obtain a license to sell alcohol, and convince distributors to provide me with inventory. It was a steep learning curve, but I was determined to make it work.
3. How did you approach marketing and promoting your business in the early days?
In the early days, I relied heavily on word-of-mouth marketing. I made sure that every customer was happy and satisfied with their purchase and encouraged them to tell their friends about my store. Eventually, I started to use social media and email marketing to reach a wider audience, but it was a slow process.
4. When did you realize that your business was going to be successful?
I think the turning point for me was when I started using Shopify as my eCommerce platform. It allowed me to sell my products online, reach customers outside of Portland, and manage my inventory more efficiently. Once my online sales started to take off, I knew that my business was going to be successful.
5. What role has Shopify played in your business's success?
Shopify has been an integral part of my business's success. Not only has it allowed me to sell my products online, but it also gives me access to valuable analytics and data that helps me make informed decisions about my inventory and marketing strategies. I couldn't imagine running my business without it.
6. Have you faced any setbacks since you started using Shopify?
I wouldn't say that I've faced any setbacks, per se, but there's definitely a learning curve when it comes to using Shopify. It took me a while to figure out how to customize my online store and really make it stand out from the competition. But once I got the hang of it, it was smooth sailing.
7. What advice would you give to someone starting a liquor store today?
My advice would be to stay patient and persistent. It's not an easy industry to break into, but if you're passionate about it and willing to put in the hard work, it can be incredibly rewarding. And definitely consider using Shopify as your eCommerce platform – it's made all the difference for me.
