Interview with Jack Knox, Owner of Leafy Haven Indoor Plant Store in Austin, TX.

1. How did you get into the indoor plant business, Jack?

I've always had a love for plants and making spaces look beautiful. After college, I traveled the world, visiting botanical gardens, and documenting every plant I encountered. It wasn't until four years ago, when I moved to Austin, that I had the courage to start my indoor plant business.

2. What challenges have you faced in starting and running the business?

At first, it was difficult to source high-quality plants from local suppliers at a competitive price. But, to overcome this challenge, I began to import some plants from other states and countries. The biggest challenge was getting the word out and attracting customers to my store. With hard work and dedication, I've been able to build a strong customer base, and my business has been growing ever since.

3. What inspired you to start selling online?

We had a lot of customers that were not from the area, and some locals found it easier to shop from the comfort of their homes. So, we knew we needed to be online. We started with occasional social media posts, but then we decided to take it to the next level and opened our online store using Shopify.

4. How has using Shopify benefited your business?

Shopify was a game-changer for our business. It allowed our customers to purchase plants online and have them delivered. We could also easily manage our inventory and customer decisions. It meant people could browse our store at any time, even outside of our regular business hours.

5. How have you adapted your business due to the pandemic?

In the early months of the pandemic, we had to close our doors to all in-person shoppers. Then we started offering curbside pickup and delivery services. We took this time to expand our online offering, and it paid off. We saw a lot of new customers from all over the country due to our increased online presence.

6. What products or services do you offer that sets you apart from other plant stores?

We don't just sell plants; we offer workshops, education on plant care, and potting services, among other plant-related events. We offer an experience in our plant store that is transformative and unique. Our team is passionate about helping our customers discover their love for plants and creating a little bit of a haven for themselves in their homes.

7. What are your future plans for Leafy Haven?

Our plan is to continue making plants accessible to the masses. We want to pursue e-commerce further and continue to grow our online presence with Shopify to reach more customers worldwide. We're also working on a more personal aspect by launching an app with the option of getting one-on-one plant consultations with one of our plant experts via video call.
