Interview with Hannah Johnson, Owner of Summit Outfitters in Boulder, Colorado
Q: Can you tell us a little about how you got started in the outdoor equipment industry?
A: I grew up in the beautiful mountains of Colorado and hiking and camping became a part of my everyday life. After college, I worked for several years in marketing, but I always felt a pull towards something more authentic and fulfilling. I decided to combine my passion for the outdoors with my business skills and opened Summit Outfitters in 2012.
Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business?
A: At first, it was difficult to get our name out there and establish ourselves as a reliable source for outdoor gear. We were competing with big chain stores and online retailers, and it was tough to stand out. Additionally, finding the right location and building our inventory without going over budget was a real challenge.
Q: How did you turn things around and go from struggling to a success story?
A: It wasn't easy, but we started to make waves by focusing on customer service and personalized attention. We took the time to listen to our customers' needs and offer tailored advice and product recommendations. We also decided to join the Shopify community, and that was a game-changer for us. Our online store brought in new customers and allowed us to join the ranks of the big e-commerce players.
Q: Can you tell us more about your experience with Shopify?
A: Shopify allowed us to reach a much wider audience and streamline our operations. We were able to manage our inventory, process orders, and track sales all in one platform. Plus, their customer support was top-notch and helped us with any questions or concerns we had.
Q: What do you think sets Summit Outfitters apart from other outdoor equipment stores?
A: I believe it's the combination of personalized attention and our expert knowledge of the products we sell. We take the time to really get to know our customers and help them find the gear that's perfect for their needs. We also have a team of experienced hikers and campers on staff who can offer expert advice and recommendations.
Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own outdoor equipment store?
A: My biggest piece of advice would be to stay true to your passion and never compromise on quality. The outdoor industry is all about authenticity and providing a true outdoor experience. If you stay true to those values, customers will take notice and your business will thrive.
Q: What's next for Summit Outfitters?
A: We're focused on continuing to grow and expand our reach. We're looking to open a second location in another outdoor hub in the near future, and we're always on the lookout for new and innovative products to bring to our customers both in-store and online.
