Interview with Samantha Miller, owner of Tracks Unlimited in Denver, Colorado
1. Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got into the model train business?
My love for model trains began when I was a child. My grandfather had a huge HO-scale layout in his basement, and I would spend hours watching the trains go by. As I grew up, I continued to be fascinated with trains, and eventually started collecting and building my own models. When I moved to Denver, I noticed that there were no dedicated model train stores in the area, and that's when I decided to open Tracks Unlimited.
2. How did you go about getting started with your business?
I spent months researching the industry and attending train shows to network and gather information. I also reached out to other train store owners for advice. Once I felt confident that I had a solid business plan, I secured a small business loan and rented a storefront in downtown Denver.
3. What were some of the challenges you faced when starting your business?
One of the biggest challenges was finding suppliers. Because I was a new business owner, many manufacturers were hesitant to work with me. I also struggled with getting my name out there and building a customer base.
4. How did you overcome those challenges?
I made sure to attend as many industry events as possible and network with other business owners. I also started leveraging social media to promote my store and connect with potential customers. Eventually, I was able to build a strong reputation in the community, which helped me establish relationships with suppliers.
5. Can you share a pivotal moment in your business's growth?
When I decided to launch an online store, it was a game-changer for my business. I partnered with Shopify to create a user-friendly shopping experience, and suddenly, I was able to reach customers all over the country. It was incredible to see the impact that having an online presence made.

Shopify has provided me with a powerful e-commerce platform that's easy to use and allows me to manage my online store with ease. I love its built-in marketing tools, which have helped me drive traffic to my site and increase sales. Plus, the customer support is fantastic.
7. What advice would you give to someone who's looking to start their own business in the model train industry?
Make sure to do your research and attend industry events to network and gather information. Building relationships with suppliers and customers will be key to your success. And don't be afraid to take risks and try new things - you never know what might take your business to the next level.
