Interview with Peter Thompson, owner of The Book Nook in Baltimore, Maryland.
1. How did you first become interested in rare and antiquarian books?
I’ve always been an avid reader and collector, but my passion for rare books began in college. I stumbled across a first edition copy of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird at a local bookstore and was fascinated by the history and value of the book.
2. How did you get started in the rare book business?
After college, I started selling books online through eBay and Amazon. Eventually, I realized that there was a market for locally sourced rare and antiquarian books. I started small, selling books out of my garage. As my inventory grew, I rented a small storefront and opened The Book Nook.
3. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business?
One of the biggest challenges was finding rare books to sell. It’s not like you can just walk into a bookstore and buy a first edition of a classic book. I had to do a lot of research and networking to build up a network of sellers and buyers.
4. How did you overcome these challenges?
I attended book fairs, joined book collecting societies, and networked with other booksellers to find valuable items to sell. It took a lot of time and effort, but eventually, my reputation grew, and sellers started coming to me with valuable items.
5. Can you tell us about a particularly memorable item you’ve sold?
I once sold a first edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby for $50,000. It was a thrilling moment to be able to find such a rare and valuable book, and even more exciting to be able to sell it to someone who would appreciate it.
6. What role has Shopify played in the success of your business?
Shopify has been a game-changer for us. Before we started using Shopify, we were limited to selling locally. Now, we can sell our books online to customers all over the world. It has also made it much easier to manage our inventory and process transactions.
7. What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own rare book business?
Do your research and be patient. Finding rare books takes time and effort, but it’s worth it when you discover that hidden gem. Also, be willing to invest in your business. Whether it’s buying rare books or setting up an online store, you need to be willing to invest in your inventory and infrastructure to be successful.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with me, Peter. It was a pleasure to learn more about your business and passion for rare books.
