Interview with Lily Chen, owner of the Blossom Tea House in Charleston, South Carolina.
1. How did you first get interested in tea and what inspired you to open the Blossom Tea House?
As a Chinese immigrant, tea has always been a part of my culture and daily life. When I moved to the United States, I found it difficult to find the same quality and variety of tea that I was accustomed to drinking. So, I decided to open the Blossom Tea House to not only share my love for tea but also provide a cultural experience for customers to enjoy.
2. What were some of the challenges you faced when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges was finding a location that was not only affordable but also accessible to customers. I also had difficulty sourcing quality teas that met my standards of taste and authenticity. To overcome these challenges, I networked with other tea shop owners and reached out to tea wholesalers for advice and recommendations. I also traveled to China to personally source the teas for my shop.
3. How has Shopify helped you grow your business?
Shopify has been a game-changer for my business. It has allowed me to easily manage my online store and reach customers beyond Charleston. Since launching the online store, I have seen a significant increase in sales and a wider customer base.
4. Your business has become very successful, with multiple locations and online sales. Did you ever expect this level of success when you first started?
Honestly, no. I started the Blossom Tea House as a passion project and never expected it to grow to this level. But I am grateful for the support from our loyal customers and the hard work of my team.
5. What sets the Blossom Tea House apart from other tea shops?
Our focus on cultural experiences sets us apart. We not only provide premium artisan teas but also offer tea tastings, cultural workshops, and events that allow customers to immerse themselves in Chinese culture.
6. What advice would you give to someone who is interested in starting their own business?
My advice would be to stay true to your passion and persevere through any challenges that come your way. Also, networking and building relationships with suppliers, industry partners, and other business owners can be invaluable.
7. What are your plans for the future of the Blossom Tea House?
Our plans are to continue to provide high-quality tea and cultural experiences for our customers and expand our online presence. We also hope to open more physical locations in the future.
