Interview with Sophia Mitchell, Owner of Brewtopia Coffee Shop in Portland, Oregon

1. Sophia, what inspired you to start Brewtopia Coffee Shop and how did you come up with the name?

Shop Stories interview with the owner of a Coffee Shop

I’ve always had a passion for coffee and the community it creates. After working in various coffee shops around Portland, I felt compelled to create a space of my own. As for the name, I wanted something that conveyed a sense of happiness and paradise, and Brewtopia just seemed to fit.

2. What were some of the challenges you faced in starting a small business like Brewtopia?

One of the biggest challenges I faced was finding the right location. After looking around for months, I finally found a small place in a quiet neighborhood in Portland. The other hurdle was getting funding for the business. It's trickier for coffee shops to get funding because of the low-profit margin on coffee.

3. How did you overcome these challenges?

I had to put in a lot of hard work to secure the funding for Brewtopia. I also had to adjust my business plan to fit the lower-profit margin reality of the coffee shop industry. I also hired experienced staff to help out in the day-to-day running of the business.

4. Can you recall a moment when you felt like giving up?

During the early days of Brewtopia, there were several moments when things seemed like they weren't going to work out as planned. But I refused to let the setbacks discourage me. I had set a goal and I was determined to make it work.

5. When did things pick up for Brewtopia?

After six months of operation, we had a steady flow of customers, both regulars and new customers. But what really catapulted our success was when we launched our online store on Shopify. This allowed us to reach even more customers, including those who live outside Portland.

6. How has Shopify contributed to the growth of Brewtopia?

Shopify has been instrumental in our growth over the past few years. Through their platform, we’ve been able to sell our specialty coffee blends and teas to customers across the country. This has not only increased our revenue, but it has also broadened our customer base.

7. What advice do you have for other small business owners who are just starting out?

My advice would be to stay focused on your goals, even when things seem to be going wrong. Remember to always do your research and ask for advice when you need it. Finally, make use of tools and resources that can help your business succeed, like Shopify, which has been an amazing partner for Brewtopia.

Thank you, Sophia, for this interview about your inspiring journey as a small business owner. It has been great to learn about your passion for coffee and how you turned that passion into Brewtopia.
