Interview with Evan Smith, Owner of Plant-Based Pantry, a Vegan Grocery Store in Portland, Oregon
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became interested in the vegan lifestyle?
My name is Evan Smith and I have always been passionate about health and wellness. About 5 years ago, I started doing more research on the environmental and ethical implications of animal agriculture, and that's when I made the decision to adopt a vegan lifestyle. It was a life-changing decision for me, and I wanted to share my passion with others in my community.
2. What inspired you to open Plant-Based Pantry, and what was the process like?
I noticed that there was a lack of vegan-friendly options in grocery stores in Portland, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and open up a vegan grocery store. The process was long and difficult, as I had to find the perfect location, create connections with suppliers and vendors, and obtain the necessary licenses and permits. However, it was all worth it in the end.
3. What were some of the challenges you faced when you first opened the store?
One major challenge was getting the word out about the store to the community. Although there are many vegans in Portland, not everyone knows about us yet. Another big challenge was finding suppliers who were willing to work with a small business like mine.
4. How did you overcome those challenges?
We overcame the challenge of getting the word out by using Shopify to create an online store and social media to build our online presence. For the supplier challenge, we focused on building solid relationships with the ones we did manage to find.
5. Can you tell us about a time when you faced a setback, and how you overcame it?
When we first opened the store, we had very low foot traffic and sales. We overcame this by holding outreach events, such as tastings and cooking classes, to bring people into the store. We also began offering local delivery options through Shopify, which helped us increase our sales.
6. Can you share a success story from your experience running Plant-Based Pantry?
One of our biggest successes has been our growth on Shopify. Our online store has allowed us to reach customers across the country, and even internationally. We've had customers order from as far away as Europe and Australia!
7. What advice would you give to someone who is interested in opening a vegan grocery store?
My advice would be to focus on building solid relationships with suppliers, creating a strong online presence, and hosting outreach events to bring in new customers. And, of course, don't be afraid to take risks and try new things.
