Shop Stories interview with the owner of a African Art Store

Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Kwame Anderson, the male owner of the African Art Store located in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia. Kwame's store offers a unique collection of African art, sculptures, textiles, and jewelry. He has had a successful career, but it wasn't always easy. Today, we dive into his journey and how it has all come together remarkably well.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the African Art business?

My name is Kwame Anderson, and I've always been interested in the arts, but more specifically, African Art. As a child, my mother would take me to art galleries, and I remember being fascinated by African sculptures and textiles. After finishing college, I decided to take my passion for African Art and start my own store.

2. What challenges did you face when building your business?

One of the biggest obstacles I had to overcome was getting my products in front of potential customers. When I first started, I didn't have a lot of money to advertise, and I wasn't in a prime location. However, I was able to take advantage of Shopify's platform by creating an online store and targeting a broader audience.

3. Can you tell us more about your experience selling through Shopify?

Shopify has been an integral part of my business's growth. It's given me access to millions of potential customers, and their platform is easy to use, which is perfect because I'm not the most tech-savvy person. With Shopify, I've been able to increase my sales by over 50%.

4. What sets your store apart from others in the industry?

Our focus is providing unique, high-quality, handcrafted African art pieces that you won't find anywhere else. We know that our customers want something special, and we make it our mission to deliver that. We also ensure that our products come directly from African artisans and are ethically sourced.

5. How have you adapted to the changing consumer landscape during the pandemic?

The pandemic was tough on us just like everyone else. However, we were fortunate to have already established an online store before it hit. We also took advantage of Shopify's features with their POS system to offer customers a touchless checkout experience.

6. What advice would you give to someone looking to start a similar business?

Don't be afraid to take risks. Building a business is all about trial and error. Not everything you do will work, but it's important to keep trying new things. Also, take advantage of technology, especially Shopify. It gave me the platform I needed to reach more people and grow my business.

7. What's next for your store?

I plan to expand our product offerings to include more unique items from different African countries. I also want to continue building our online presence and reaching more customers through Shopify.

Thank you, Kwame, for sharing your inspirational journey with us. Your passion for African Art has undoubtedly built a unique and successful business. Congratulations on your success, maverick entrepreneur!
