Interview with Ethan Murphy, owner of Buzzing Beehive Beekeeping Supplies in Portland, Oregon.

1. Can you tell us about your background and how you got into beekeeping?

I've always had a fascination with insects and nature, so beekeeping seemed like the perfect hobby for me. I started keeping bees in my backyard and fell in love with how fascinating and important these small creatures are for our ecosystem.

2. What inspired you to start Buzzing Beehive Beekeeping Supplies?

As I got deeper into beekeeping, I realized how important it is to have access to high-quality beekeeping gear and supplies. They can be hard to come by, especially if you live in a city like Portland where there are not many options for beekeepers. I wanted to help beekeepers in my community by providing them with everything they need to start and maintain their hives.

3. Can you talk about some of the challenges you faced when starting your business?

One of the biggest challenges was finding a space to open my store. Commercial rent in Portland is notoriously high, and I didn't have much money to invest in a physical storefront. I also had to compete with larger, more established online retailers who had more resources and a wider customer base.

4. How did you overcome these challenges?

I decided to get creative with my business model and focus on building an online presence using Shopify. This allowed me to reach customers all over the country, not just in Portland. I also collaborated with local beekeeping organizations and held workshops to build my local customer base.

5. What role did Shopify play in your business success?

Shopify was a game-changer for my business. It allowed me to create a professional and easy-to-use online store that could compete with larger retailers. The platform is user-friendly, and I love the fact that it integrates seamlessly with other business tools like inventory management and shipping software.

6. Can you talk about your unexpected success and how you feel about it?

I never anticipated that my business would grow as quickly as it did. It's been amazing to see the buzz (no pun intended) around my store and to know that I'm helping beekeepers all over the country. The success has been humbling and I'm grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the beekeeping community.

7. What's next for Buzzing Beehive Beekeeping Supplies?

I want to continue expanding my online presence and product offerings. I'm also planning to hold more workshops and events in the Portland area to educate and connect with the local beekeeping community. Ultimately, my goal is to become the go-to destination for beekeepers across the country.
