Shop Stories interview with the owner of a Drive-In Diner

Introduction: Today we have the pleasure of chatting with Betty Johnson, the female owner of Rustic Drive-In Diner, a retro-style joint serving classic American fare in the heart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Betty, who started the business from scratch, has overcome many obstacles on her path to success and we're excited to hear all about it.

1. What inspired you to start Rustic Drive-In Diner and how did you make it a reality?

Betty: I grew up in the Midwest, and I always loved the old-school drive-ins that were popular back in the day. I felt that Cedar Rapids was missing that kind of place, so I decided to take a leap of faith and open my own drive-in diner. It wasn't easy, but I worked hard and eventually saved enough money to buy a plot of land and turn it into the Rustic Drive-In Diner we know today.

2. What were some of the challenges you faced in starting your business and how did you overcome them?

Betty: Honestly, there were so many challenges along the way. One of the biggest hurdles was getting the word out about the diner and attracting customers. I relied heavily on social media and local advertising to spread the word. Another challenge was managing my inventory and keeping track of orders manually. That's where Shopify came in to save the day. Using their platform, I was able to automate my inventory management and streamline my ordering process.

3. How has Shopify helped your business grow and what features do you find most helpful?

Betty: Shopify has been an absolute game-changer for us. The platform has made it incredibly easy to manage my inventory, fulfill orders, and track sales. One of the features I love most is the ability to set up automatic restocking alerts, so I never run out of essential supplies. Shopify has made running my business so much easier and allowed me to focus on providing the best customer service possible.

4. What sets Rustic Drive-In Diner apart from other fast-food joints?

Betty: Our carhop service is definitely a unique feature that sets us apart. Customers can park their cars, order from our menu, and have their food delivered right to their car. It's a fun and nostalgic experience that our customers love.

5. What is your most popular item on the menu?

Betty: Our burgers are definitely the crowd favorite. We use fresh beef and locally-sourced produce to create a burger that's juicy and delicious. We also have a secret sauce that customers can't seem to get enough of!

6. What is your fondest memory of running Rustic Drive-In Diner?

Betty: It's hard to pick just one fond memory because there have been so many great moments. I think my favorite is seeing the joy on the faces of customers when they first experience our carhop service. It's a unique and fun experience that really sets us apart.

7. What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of starting their own business?

Betty: My advice would be to never give up. There will be challenges along the way, but if you stay focused on your goal and work hard, anything is possible. And don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Platforms like Shopify have resources and support that can help make running your business easier and more successful.
