Interview with Adam Johnson, owner of Sweet Maple Farm in Burlington, Vermont.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about how Sweet Maple Farm got started?

Well, I've always loved maple syrup. It's a staple here in Vermont. I grew up on a farm and we would always make our own syrup every year. I knew I wanted to continue that tradition, so after college, I bought a small piece of land and started tapping trees. It started just as a hobby but eventually grew into something so much bigger.

2. What were some of the challenges you faced early on?

In the beginning, it was just me and a few friends tapping trees. We had no idea what we were doing. But the biggest challenge was finding customers. We started by selling on the side of the road, but we quickly realized that wasn't going to sustain us. We needed to find a way to sell our products beyond just local customers.

3. How did you overcome those challenges?

We knew we needed an online presence, but had no idea where to start. That's when we discovered Shopify. It made it so easy for us to set up an online store and sell our products all over the country. It really leveled the playing field for us.

4. What role has Shopify played in your business' success?

Shopify has been instrumental in our success. It's provided us with a platform to sell our products, manage inventory, and view analytics. We've been able to reach customers all over the country who wouldn't have known about us otherwise. It's been a game-changer.

5. What unexpected opportunities has Sweet Maple Farm had since starting your business?

We never expected to be as successful as we are today. We started out just selling syrup and now we offer tours, sell maple products, and have a loyal customer base. We've had the opportunity to work with local restaurants, catering companies, and even large retailers worldwide. It's been an incredible journey.

6. Could you tell us about a memorable experience you've had running Sweet Maple Farm?

One of my most memorable experiences was when we had a group of school children visit from a nearby school. It was amazing seeing their eyes light up as they got to learn about the process of making syrup. They got to see the trees being tapped, the sap being collected, and the syrup being made. It was a great feeling to be able to educate and inspire them.

7. What advice would you give to someone looking to start a business?

Don't be afraid to take risks. I had no idea if Sweet Maple Farm would succeed but I took a chance and it paid off. Also, listen to feedback from customers. It's important to adapt and change with consumer needs.
