Interview with Jack Reynolds, owner of RoboWorks, a robotics workshop located in Seattle, Washington.
1. How did you first become interested in robotics and what led you to open RoboWorks?
I've been interested in robotics since I was a kid, tinkering with my first robot kit at the age of eight. After studying mechanical engineering in college, I worked for a few years designing industrial robots for manufacturing companies. But I always wanted to bring robotics to a wider audience, especially young people. So, I decided to open RoboWorks as a way to provide not just robotic kits, but also classes and STEM education to kids and adults in the Seattle area.
2. What were some of the initial challenges you faced when launching your workshop?
One of the biggest hurdles was finding the right location. I wanted to be in a spot where there was foot traffic and visibility but also affordable rent. It took a lot of searching, but eventually, I found a great space that met all my needs. Another challenge was getting the word out about the workshop. At first, it was just me and a few volunteers, but over time, we've been able to build a loyal customer base through word of mouth and social media.
3. When did you first integrate Shopify into your business, and how has it impacted your bottom line?
I first learned about Shopify from a fellow business owner in the area who was using it for their online store. At the time, I was only selling robotics kits in person at the workshop, but I realized that I could expand my reach by creating an online store as well. The integration process was straightforward, and since launching the online store, we've been able to reach customers from all over the country, which has significantly increased our sales.
4. What do you think sets RoboWorks apart from other robotics workshops or stores?
First and foremost, our commitment to education is what sets us apart. We don't just sell kits and parts, we also offer classes and workshops for people of all ages and skill levels. We believe that robotics and STEM education should be accessible to everyone, not just those with a background in engineering or technology. Additionally, we have a team of knowledgeable and passionate employees who are dedicated to providing the best customer service possible.
5. Have you noticed any trends in the types of products or services that customers are most interested in?
Definitely. One trend we've noticed is that there is a growing interest in programmable robots and open-source hardware. Customers want to be able to customize and create their own robots rather than just buying pre-made kits. We've also seen more demand for advanced classes and workshops, particularly in the areas of machine learning and computer vision.
6. Looking back, what has been your proudest moment as a business owner?
My proudest moment was when we hit our first major milestone in sales. It was a sign that our hard work was paying off, and it gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward. Another proud moment was when we were able to begin offering scholarships to underprivileged children who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford our classes.
7. What does the future hold for RoboWorks?
Our goal is to continue to expand our reach and provide the best possible products and services to our customers. We want to become a go-to destination for robotics enthusiasts and students of all ages, and we believe that with our commitment to education and innovation, we can achieve that goal.
