Interview with Max Jones, Owner of Jones Science Shop in Los Angeles, California
Q: How did you first get interested in science and educational toys?
A: I've always loved science and learning, and I really enjoyed tinkering with chemistry sets and model rockets as a kid. As I got older, I found that there was a real need for accessible educational toys and science kits, especially in the Los Angeles area.
Q: What led you to start the Jones Science Shop?

A: One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was finding a way to stand out in a crowded market. There were already a lot of toy stores and online retailers selling science kits and educational toys, so I knew I needed to find a way to differentiate myself. Another hurdle was finding the right suppliers -- I wanted to make sure I was carrying the best products at the most competitive prices.
Q: How did you overcome these challenges and find success?
A: Finding success was a journey that took time and persistence. One thing that really helped was launching an online store using Shopify. This allowed me to reach a much wider audience and provide a seamless buying experience for customers. Additionally, I worked hard to create a welcoming and engaging environment in the physical store -- it wasn't just about selling products, but about creating a real community for science-minded people of all ages.
Q: What is something that sets Jones Science Shop apart from other science-focused toy stores?
A: We're all about education, curiosity, and discovery. We carry a wide range of products, from classic chemistry sets and telescopes to the latest STEM-focused toys and games. We also offer workshops and events where kids and adults can explore different aspects of science in a really hands-on way. Finally, we pride ourselves on our knowledgeable and friendly staff, who are always happy to offer advice and recommendations.
Q: Can you tell us about a particularly memorable moment from your time running the Jones Science Shop?
A: One moment that stands out to me is when we held a workshop for a group of kids from a local school. They were really enthusiastic about the projects we were working on and it was great to see them learning and having fun. After the workshop, a parent came up to me and told me that her son had always struggled with science in school, but after spending an afternoon at the shop, he was excited and eager to learn more. Moments like that make it all worthwhile.

A: We're always looking for new and innovative products to carry, and we're constantly expanding our offerings to keep up with the latest trends in science and education. We're also focused on growing our online presence and building a strong community of science enthusiasts.
