Interview with Dana Robinson, Owner of Ink It Up Custom Tees in Austin, Texas

Q: What inspired you to start Ink It Up Custom Tees?

I’ve always had a passion for creating unique designs and fashion. After years of working in retail and design, I realized there was a gap in the market for custom-made t-shirts that are both affordable and stylish. That’s when I decided to launch Ink It Up Custom Tees in downtown Austin.

Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business?

One of the biggest challenges was getting exposure and driving traffic to the store. It was difficult to compete with larger, established retailers in the area. Additionally, I struggled with managing orders effectively and keeping up with inventory on a consistent basis.

Q: How did you overcome those challenges?

I made an effort to build my social media presence and run targeted ads on Facebook and Instagram. I also started partnering with local businesses and organizations to promote my store. As for managing orders, I eventually implemented a Shopify platform that helped me streamline the process and keep track of inventory more easily.

Q: What do you think sets Ink It Up Custom Tees apart from other t-shirt stores?

I think what sets us apart is our personalized approach. We work with each customer to create designs that truly reflect their vision and personality. We also strive to use high-quality materials and stay up-to-date with the latest design trends.

Q: Can you tell us about a particularly memorable customer experience?

One of the most memorable experiences was when a customer ordered a t-shirt with a unique design that her son had drawn. She was so happy with the final product that she cried tears of joy. It was moments like that that made me realize the impact we can have on people’s lives through our designs.

Q: What has been your most unexpected success?

Definitely our online sales through Shopify. I initially only set up the platform to better manage orders, but it quickly grew into a significant portion of our business. The ease of use and customer-friendly interface really helped us take our business to the next level.

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own business?

My advice would be to stay passionate and persistent. It’s not easy to start a business, but if you truly believe in your vision and are willing to put in the work, it can be incredibly rewarding. Additionally, don’t be afraid to reach out to mentors or other small business owners for advice and support.
