Interview with Sarah Jacobs, Owner of Seafood Sensations in Portland, Maine

1. How did you first get started in the seafood business?

Shop Stories interview with the owner of a Fishmonger

I grew up in Maine and have always had a passion for fresh seafood. After completing my culinary arts degree, I worked at a few seafood restaurants in Portland. However, I always had the desire to start my own business selling seafood that was sourced directly from local fishermen.

2. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business?

One of the biggest challenges was finding the right location for my store. I wanted to be near the docks where the fishermen brought in their catch, but also in a spot that was easily accessible to customers. I also had to figure out how to finance my business and find reliable vendors for my products.

3. You mentioned having trouble finding reliable vendors, how did you overcome this obstacle?

I built relationships with local fishermen and fishing co-ops, which allowed me to source the freshest seafood possible. I also partnered with distributors who share my values for sustainable and ethical fishing practices.

4. Your store has recently gained a lot of traction, can you tell us more about that?

Yes, Seafood Sensations has had a lot of success lately thanks to our online store. We partnered with Shopify, which has allowed us to serve customers all over the country who are looking for high-quality seafood products.

5. How has Shopify helped your business grow?

Shopify has been an amazing platform for us to expand our business. It's easy to use and has given us a lot of flexibility when it comes to creating and promoting our products. We are now able to reach customers we never could have before.

6. What sets Seafood Sensations apart from other fishmongers in the area?

Our commitment to sourcing only the freshest and highest quality seafood is what really sets us apart. We work directly with local fishermen and fishing co-ops to ensure that our products are sustainably sourced and always fresh. Our customers appreciate the care we put into our products, and that's why they keep coming back.

7. What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own seafood business?

My advice would be to stick to your values and stay committed to providing high-quality products to your customers. Don't be afraid to take risks and experiment with new products, but always stay true to your core values. And of course, take advantage of technologies like Shopify to help your business reach new heights.
