Interview with Jack Reynolds, Owner of Scentsations Perfumery in Seattle, Washington
1. Can you tell us how you got started in the perfume business?
I've always been intrigued by scents and the way they can evoke memories and emotions. After years of working in corporate America, I decided to follow my passion and start my own perfumery. I started out by creating and selling handmade perfume oils online and eventually opened a physical store in Seattle.
2. What sets Scentsations Perfumery apart from other fragrance shops?
We create all of our fragrances in-house using only the finest ingredients. Each scent tells a unique story and is designed to transport the wearer to a specific time or place. We also offer custom fragrance consultations and host fragrance-making workshops.
3. Can you share a particularly challenging moment in your business and how you overcame it?
Starting out was definitely a challenge. I had to learn everything from scratch and didn't have much experience in running a business. But the biggest challenge was when we had to close our physical store due to the pandemic. We had to pivot quickly and focus on our online sales. Thank goodness for platforms like Shopify that made it easy for us to set up an online store and reach our customers.
4. Speaking of Shopify, can you elaborate on how it has helped your business?
Shopify has been a game-changer for us. It has made it so much easier for us to manage our online store. We can easily add new products, track inventory, and process orders all in one place. Plus, their customer support is top-notch.
5. Can you tell us about a particularly memorable client interaction?
One of my favorite memories was when a customer came in looking for a specific scent that would remind her of her grandmother. Together, we created a custom fragrance that perfectly captured the essence of her grandmother's home. It was such a special moment to be able to help her reconnect with those memories.
6. What is the biggest lesson you've learned in running a small business?
The biggest lesson I've learned is that it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to run a successful business. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort to make it work, especially during difficult times. And it's important to always listen to your customers and adapt to their needs.
7. What do you see for the future of Scentsations Perfumery?
We're always striving to create new and innovative scents that tell compelling stories. We also want to continue offering personalized customer experiences, whether in-person or online. And who knows, maybe one day we'll expand to other cities and share our love of fragrance with even more people.
