Shop Stories interview with the owner of a Grocery store

Interview with Sarah West, owner of West’s Grocery Store in Houston, Texas.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how West’s Grocery Store came to be?

Sarah: My name is Sarah West and I’ve always had a passion for providing people with quality products at reasonable prices. I’ve lived in Houston, Texas for most of my life and knew that the community needed a local grocery store that could cater to their everyday needs. So, my husband and I came up with the idea of West’s Grocery Store and started working on it in 2016.

Q: What were some of the challenges that you faced during the early days of setting up the store?

Sarah: The biggest challenge we faced was financing the startup. We didn’t have investors or savings to rely on, so we had to use our credit cards and whatever savings we had. We had to work hard to keep our expenses low, which meant working long hours, doing marketing ourselves, and taking on multiple roles in the business. It was a tough period, but we remained focused on providing the best customer experience and staying true to our values.

Q: So, how did you manage to succeed in such a competitive industry?

Sarah: One of the best decisions we made was to create an online store with Shopify. It allowed us to expand our reach and connect with customers who live outside of Houston. We focused on providing high-quality products that customers couldn't find elsewhere and ensured that our pricing was reasonable. We also provided exceptional customer service and ensured that everyone who shopped with us felt valued.

Q: Can you share with us some of the successes that you’ve experienced in recent years?

Sarah: Well, I’m pleased to say that we’ve expanded our product range significantly since we started. We now offer much more than just groceries – we have household supplies, beauty products, and so much more. Our online store has also been doing incredibly well, and this has been particularly important in recent times because of COVID-19, which has forced many people to stay at home. Having both an online and physical store has helped us reach more people and allowed our business to thrive.

Q: Do you have any advice for others looking to start their own business?

Sarah: My advice to anyone starting their own business would be to remain persistent and keep pushing even when things get tough. It’s not easy, but if you stay true to your values, work hard, and keep your customers happy, you can eventually find success. Also, don't be afraid to try new things like using Shopify. It helped us tremendously, and it can do the same for you.

Q: Lastly, what’s next for West’s Grocery Store?

Sarah: We have big plans for the future, but for now, we’re focused on improving the customer experience both in-store and online. We’re always searching for new and unique products to offer, and we want to continue expanding our reach to help more people. We’re excited about what the future holds for West’s Grocery Store.

Thank you, Sarah, for sharing your journey with us. It's inspiring to see how hard work, perseverance, and a willingness to try new things, like using Shopify, can pay off. Good luck with your future endeavors.
