Interview with Madison Owens, Owner of Scoops Ice Cream Parlor in Austin, Texas
Q: What inspired you to open an ice cream parlor, and how did you select the name?
A: I always had a sweet tooth and loved making desserts, so I thought opening an ice cream parlor would be a perfect fit. As for the name, I wanted something catchy and fun, and Scoops just felt right.
Q: What were the biggest challenges you faced when opening up shop?
A: Honestly, finding the right location and getting the necessary permits were the toughest hurdles. It took a lot of time and patience, but we finally found the perfect spot in a busy downtown area.
Q: Can you describe any unique flavors or treats your parlor offers that sets you apart from competitors?
A: We have a signature flavor called "Hill Country Honeycomb" that's made with local honey and bits of honeycomb candy. It's definitely a customer favorite. We also offer homemade sorbets and vegan ice creams for our non-dairy and vegan customers.
Q: How did you initially market your business, and what strategies have been most effective?
A: At first, we relied heavily on social media and word of mouth. Once we had established a strong customer base, we turned to using Shopify to create an online presence for our store. This has been incredibly effective in driving sales and allowing us to reach new customers outside of our area.
Q: Can you speak to any unexpected successes or major milestones you've achieved since opening?
A: Our biggest success has definitely been the addition of our online store through Shopify. We never imagined we'd be able to reach customers across the country, but with our online store, we're able to do just that. We also received recognition from a major food magazine, which was amazing and really helped put us on the map.
Q: What advice do you have for entrepreneurs looking to start their own business?
A: My biggest piece of advice is to be patient and don't give up. Starting a business can be tough, but with persistence and determination, success is possible. Also, never be afraid to ask for help or advice from other business owners. We've learned so much from our fellow entrepreneurs in the community.
Q: What's next for Scoops Ice Cream Parlor?
A: We're hoping to expand our online store and continue experimenting with new flavors and treats. We're also looking into incorporating more sustainable and eco-friendly practices into our business.
